Travelling from Punta Cana airport to Cabarete can be an effort, but with the new highway it’s become fees able.  Here are your travel options

Taxi  US$300, 5 hours

Taxis are all right outside the airpot.  You can try and negotiate the rate with them, as it’s a big fare.  If there’s a group then the cost is manageable.  The new highway has made the drive much faster, and it more enjoyable.

Bus & guagua US$20, 8-12 hours or via Santo Domingo – 18 hours

This can be a little tricky, as you have to change buses and gua guas a couple times.  You have two route option – make sure you take the highway via Nagua! Alternative option –  There is a ferry from Samana to Sabana de la Mar.   From there you can visit the National Park, Los Haitises, before continue your journey down through  Higuey to Punta Cana Airport.

Flight US$150, 45 minutes

Fast and easy.  There are flights on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 5 pm , and the view is fantastic.

Drive  US$90, 6 hours

Make sure you rent from a major tour operator, and that you obtain a one way rental.  There is a brand new toll highway that in a virtual straight line from the town of Catey (on the north coast between Nagua and Sanchez) straight down to just west of Santo Domingo airport. The toll fee adds up to about US$10. This is the easiest and most pleasant route to take from Cabarete to Punta Cana.

From Cabarete head east to Catey (2 hr drive), then head south to Sto Domingo (1 hr app) then head east to Punta Cana (app 3 hrs).
